ITIN vs. SSN: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

🇪🇸 Leer en Español

Two of the most common questions we hear: "What's the difference between an ITIN and an SSN?" and "Which one do I need?" Both are tax ID numbers, but they serve very different purposes.

At Gator Agent, we're a Certified Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS to process ITIN applications in Palm Beach County.

SSN (Social Security Number)

Issued by the Social Security Administration to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and authorized workers. Allows you to work legally, collect Social Security benefits, and file taxes.

ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

Issued by the IRS to people who need to file taxes but can't get an SSN. Format: 9XX-XX-XXXX. Does not authorize employment or change immigration status.

What You Can Do with an ITIN

What You Cannot Do

  • Work legally in the U.S.
  • Collect Social Security
  • Qualify for EITC
  • Change immigration status

ITIN Renewal

ITINs expire after 3 years of non-use. We handle renewals as a Certified Acceptance Agent — your passport never has to be mailed to the IRS.
